The best baby bed ever!

"Teej" reminded me today that I had planned on blogging about our homemade baby bed. We call it a Malaysian hammock, because our friends have one that is similar, and they got it from Malaysia. After scouring the web for how to make one - I found that there were very few, and they seemed a little more common in Eastern countries, where they probably jimmied some steel hangers into their creation. It has been the most brilliant sleep aid that we've had for our babies (and our selves) so far. Joash was a little colicky, or so they said, but he was always consoled in a sling. So when we saw this, we were sold. It's on a spring - so you give baby a little bounce and they are all set to dreamland. We are planning on making about 100 and selling them later this year. We have a couple orders already. I have been a little hesitant because - I don't know if we need a waiver form - or a label "never leave your child unattended" - and yet people sell slings and homemade baby carriers all the time.

  1. very adorable - i wanted one called a something "nest" when i had my first baby - it was much more complicated than this - i like the simple lines of it... May God bless your venture!

  2. very cool! i would def. investigate the legal aspect before you buy the materials. just seems like something that mainstream would construe as very dangerous/suffocation hazard or whatever. but cool & cute!!

  3. thanks! I'm kind of wondering if we'll have to go somewhat under the table at first - like we do with some of our food! The food laws where we live are ridiculous and some of the MOST healthy stuff is illegal - so we buy it under the table - so I can feed my family wholesome, raw, organic food. wondered if i have to do something similar for now - as i think it would probably be thru the roof financially to 'certify'.

  6. thank-you! I thought they were more common in hotter, eastern countries - and in cultures where baby is closer to mama physically! We, in the west, could learn some from them!

    So delighted to see our little baby hammock on your blog. I remember using one with our new babies, Joseph first and then Su Li who was almost 2 when we had her...bouncing, bouncing, bouncing....finally I got fed up because she depended on the continual movement in order to sleep--but it is a very comforting, cozy way for a young baby to settle and rest....

    Very common in Asia, the sling was often almost a mesh so that lots of air could circulate under the baby in the heat of the day....

  8. That is amazing that Su Li slept in the hammock at 2 yrs! Many people have asked me how long can a baby sleep in one - and I answer them honestly - I have no idea - we are experiencing it for the first time ourselves.

  9. Just read this old post. I LOVE this. If God ever allows us to grow our family here on earth again, we have discussed making something similar ourselves. So its fun to see that other parents do it too. We just lost our 5th baby at 7 weeks along. My 2nd miscarriage in 4 months. :( Hopefully one day, we'll have another tiny one in our arms to snuggle and then place in a cozy little bed such as this. I do pray that is in our future. Oh, and I feel comfortable mentioning our losses here b/c its such an old post and all, but I'm not mentioning it on my blog b/c my Papa reads it and is having a hard time right now after loosing our dear Nana a few months ago....and my first miscarriage really freaked him out. Poor guy. Just protecting him.
